This project was for a module in university where I was tasked with surveying an old building. The requirements for the old building was to have been built before 1950 and has not been lived in for 5 years plus.
The old building of choice is located on the old junction road in between Kilskeery and Irvinestown in Co. Fermanagh. The building is located near an old railway station used before the railway lines was deconstructed and is located a mile from the main road. The old building was built as a farmhouse in the 1800s. The building was once owned by a wealthy family known as the Gorrels of Fermanagh which owned a large amount of land around the village of Kilskeery. The family lived around Kilskeery for about 200yrs.
A condition survey was completed in semester 1. In semester 2 the adaptation part of the building was proposed. Parts of the building which could not be saved would be removed and replaced as per the existing structure to keep the outside of the building historically accurate. Various AutoCAD details were completed to help show the proposed works. To insulate the 600mm solid stone walls of the building, an internal stud wall was built up. The new wall makeup was as follows. The exterior of the wall would be lime plaster to protect the existing walls from moisture. Furthermore, after the existing stone wall there will be a 50mm air cavity to help the wall breath followed by a 100mm internal stud wall filled with wood fibre insulation. Another aim as per the project brief was to create a new commercial extension to the building.
